A gummy smile is also known as ‘excessive gingival display’. In simple terms it occurs when an excessive amount of gum is shown when smiling.
Gummy smiles can occur for multiple reasons. These can include a short lip, larger gum tissue, or excessive growth of the upper jaw. The amount of gum tissue showed when smiling can be exacerbated by hyperactive facial muscles that pull the lips up to sit higher than normal.
Gummy smile can be treated with botulinum injections along the upper lip area, therefore paralysing the muscles that lift the lip excessively when smiling.
Following a thorough consultation (including medical history and consent), Dr McCowan will prescribe the appropriate product for your needs. The area/s are cleansed and the product is injected under the surface of the skin.
Treatments usually work after 7-14 days and can last up to 3-6 months depending on the individual. The recommended treatment regime would be 2-3 times per year to ensure the best results.
Possible side effects of treatment will be discussed at the consultation. If you have any queries before this please do not hesitate to contact us and we can provide further information before your appointment.
We advise only gentle cleaning of the face, using light pressure only for 24 hours. No makeup/creams for 24 hours, no strenuous exercise for 24 hours and no sun beds/saunas for 24 hours.
